Amid soaring food and basic necessities prices, social amelioration programs, or “ayuda,” have become essential for millions of Filipinos, receiving overwhelming public support from surveys by Social Weather Stations (SWS) and Pulse Asia. The programs, such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD), have approval ratings of over 80% from Filipinos, proving their vital role in providing relief in times of economic hardship. However, some critics, including economists, continue to undermine these programs, accusing them of being political tools or unsustainable. Despite such criticism, these programs offer crucial support for the poorest sectors, especially amid inflation and rising rice prices. Calls for transparency and better distribution continue as ayuda remains a necessary intervention until systemic economic issues are addressed.
