A third civilian mission to the West Philippine Sea by the Atin Ito coalition began on Sunday, May 25, with volunteers departing Manila aboard the M/V Kapitan Felix Oca.
The group is headed to El Nido, Palawan, where they plan a pre-departure musical event before sailing to the vicinity of Pag-asa Island for a “sea concert.”
The Philippine Coast Guard will deploy vessels to ensure the volunteers’ safety during the mission.
This marks the coalition’s third civilian-led effort, following previous missions that included breaking through Chinese blockades to deliver aid to Filipino fisherfolk.
The Philippines continues to assert its maritime claims in the West Philippine Sea despite China’s rejection of a 2016 Hague tribunal ruling invalidating China’s nine-dash line claim.
