Alexandra Eala made history at the US Open on Sunday, becoming the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam singles match after stunning 14th seed Clara Tauson of Denmark, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13/11).
The 20-year-old from Quezon City rallied from a 1-5 deficit in the deciding set to complete a remarkable comeback on the Grandstand court.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. congratulated Eala, praising her victory as a moment of pride for the nation.
The win adds to Eala’s breakthrough year, following her upset wins over top players at the Miami Open, and comes two years after she captured the US Open girls’ title.
Eala said she draws pride from representing the Philippines, vowing to carry the same fighting spirit into her next matches.
