A survey by OCTA Research found that most Filipinos support expanded naval patrols, continued diplomacy, and the modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines as key strategies in addressing tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
The poll showed 69 percent favor increased naval and troop presence, 66 percent support diplomatic solutions, and 64 percent back military modernization, reflecting public preference for a balanced approach that combines sovereignty protection, peaceful engagement, and stronger defense capabilities.
The AFP welcomed the findings, saying they align with its mandate and the implementation of the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept, which emphasizes external defense.
Meanwhile, independent maritime monitoring group SeaLight reported spotting a possible structure near the lagoon entrance of Panatag Shoal, a disputed maritime feature within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
Defense officials are monitoring developments as concerns over activities in the area continue to draw public and government attention.
