The Armed Forces of the Philippines reported spotting 20 Chinese vessels near multiple features in the West Philippine Sea during the first week of December, including ships from the Chinese Coast Guard, the PLA Navy, and maritime militias.
Despite the sightings, AFP officials said the presence of Chinese vessels remains “not unusual,” noting that 300 to 350 militia ships are typically in the area and that the AFP continues regular patrols with the PCG and BFAR. Rear Adm.
Roy Vincent Trinidad explained that Chinese maritime militias serve dual roles as fishermen and force multipliers, while the AFP focuses monitoring efforts on the CCG and PLA Navy.
The AFP added that there have been no major shifts in its security posture in areas such as Bajo de Masinloc and Pagasa Island.
The report follows a recent PCG surveillance flight that counted 101 militia vessels in disputed waters.
