Over 150,000 people have supported the Archdiocese of Cebu’s campaign against the Absolute Divorce Bill by signing the “Yes to Marriage, Yes to the Family, and No to Divorce” petition.
The archdiocese reported that 157,840 signatures were collected as of July 21, 2024, and these have been submitted to the Senate, which has yet to review the proposed measure.
The Absolute Divorce Bill, authored by Rep. Edcel Lagman, passed the House of Representatives and allows for divorce under specified grounds.
Archbishop Jose Palma and other church leaders have led anti-divorce rallies, arguing that divorce would undermine marriage and family values.
They assert that the Philippines should remain proud of its stance against divorce, emphasizing that existing laws already address marital separations.
