$10M ADAPTATION FUND GRANT TO BOOST CLIMATE-RESILIENT WATER INFRASTRUCTURE IN TAWI-TAWI

The Philippine government has secured a $10 million grant from the Adaptation Fund to develop climate-resilient communities in Tawi-Tawi, focusing on improving water supply, access, and management.

The project, a collaboration between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Finance (DOF), is the country’s first Adaptation Fund-financed initiative and will specifically target the municipalities of Sibutu and Sitangkai.

The project adopts a water-energy-food nexus framework, addressing the interdependence of these systems to tackle water scarcity, which has been a persistent issue in Tawi-Tawi, particularly in schools.

Key components of the project include deploying climate-resilient water systems, building local capacity for sustainable water management, and enhancing livelihood opportunities.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the Mindanao Development Authority will implement the project, with a focus on replicating it in other regions of the country.
