The University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) is set to become the first in the country to formally offer a dental sleep medicine program by integrating it into its undergraduate curriculum and continuing education courses.
The program, led by UP College of Dentistry (UPCD) Dean Dr. Michelle Segarra, aims to train dentists to address sleep-related breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea through collaboration with other health professionals.
In January 2026, six UPCD faculty members will undergo intensive training in Thailand to prepare for launching short courses by August.
Dental sleep medicine, a specialized field focusing on conditions like snoring, dry mouth, and bruxism, is crucial for early detection to prevent serious health risks.
The initiative is supported by experts and alumni, including internationally recognized orthodontist Dr. Maria Therese Galang-Boquiren, and seeks to position UPM as a regional leader in this emerging dental specialty.
