TAAL VOLCANO SEISMIC ACTIVITY RISES; MINOR ERUPTION POSSIBLE, SAYS PHIVOLCS

Phivolcs has warned of increased seismic activity at Taal Volcano, which may cause short-term pressure buildup and a possible minor phreatic or phreatomagmatic eruption.

Since early July 6, seismic energy measurements have sharply increased while volcanic tremors continue, though visual observations show no degassing plume from the main crater.

The agency noted low sulfur dioxide emissions and a halt in crater degassing, suggesting gas pathway blockages that could lead to an eruption.

Taal remains at Alert Level 1, meaning the volcano is abnormal and still poses risks such as steam-driven eruptions, ashfall, and volcanic gases.

Phivolcs strongly advises keeping clear of the volcano’s permanent danger zone and warns local authorities and pilots to prepare for potential hazards.
