PHILIPPINES, AUSTRALIA STRENGTHEN COOPERATION IN MARITIME SECURITY AND CYBER TECHNOLOGY

The Philippines and Australia signed agreements to boost cooperation in maritime security, cyber technology, and law. This includes working together on civil maritime security, protecting the marine environment, and upholding international law.

President Marcos of the Philippines emphasized the importance of this partnership, especially as the Philippines faces maritime disputes with China. The two countries also agreed to collaborate on cyber and critical technology and competition law and policy.

Australia will also provide $20 million to support the Philippines’ justice system reforms. This comes as the Philippines and Australia upgraded their relationship to a strategic partnership in September 2023.

Both countries aim to build a peaceful region where international law is respected and trade routes remain open.

President Marcos is slated to revisit Australia next week for the Australia-ASEAN Special Summit in Melbourne.

These visits underscore Marcos’ active diplomatic engagement, marking his third and fourth international trips this year, following engagements in Brunei and Vietnam.
