The Philippines faces a growing education crisis that threatens economic growth and workforce readiness, PBEd President Chito Salazar warned at the 2026 Leadership Forum.
He said the core problem lies in basic education, where many students cannot read, and without urgent reforms, the country risks a broader economic crisis.
Reports from the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) reveal classroom shortages, learning gaps, and insufficient preparation for future jobs, but also provide roadmaps for long-term solutions.
Early progress includes expanded digital learning, accelerated classroom construction, and literacy-focused initiatives, supported by public-private partnerships.
Salazar emphasized that education is an economic strategy, not a social expense, and called for sustained collaboration between government, industry, and communities to ensure a skilled, globally competitive workforce.
