PHARMA AND DRUGSTORES OPPOSE MEDICINE SALES IN NEIGHBORHOOD STORES

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) proposed allowing sari-sari stores to sell over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to improve access and income for micro-retailers, but the plan faced strong opposition from pharmacists and drugstore groups.

The Philippine Pharmacists Association (PPhA) and the Drugstores Association of the Philippines (DSAP) warned that the proposal could lead to increased risks of fake medicines, improper self-medication, and violations of existing health laws.

They emphasized that only licensed pharmacies with professional oversight should sell medicines to ensure public safety.

The DTI later clarified that no final decision had been made and promised thorough consultations with stakeholders before moving forward.

Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Health (DOH) have yet to release an official stance on the matter.
