The Commission on Population and Development (CPD) reported that the Philippines has recorded nearly 139,000 adolescent mothers, with a troubling increase in pregnancies among girls below 15 years old.
Citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority, CPD said there were 138,697 mothers aged 10 to 19 nationwide, with Calabarzon posting the highest number.
CPD executive director Lisa Bersales noted that while pregnancies among girls aged 15 to 19 are declining, cases involving those under 15 continue to rise.
She attributed early pregnancies to factors such as poverty, low educational attainment, absent parents, and increased exposure to social media.
To address the issue, CPD said it is intensifying education and awareness campaigns on teenage pregnancy at the local level.
