Mexican police will deploy a pack of robot dogs to help maintain security during the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the U.S. and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
The four-legged robots, purchased for 2.5 million pesos ($145,000) bythe Guadalupe city council, can enter dangerous areas, broadcast live video, and assist officers in planning interventions.
A demonstration showed a robot navigating an abandoned building, climbing stairs, and using a loudspeaker to order an armed man to drop his weapon.
Guadalupe Mayor Hector Garcia said the robo-dogs are intended to protect police officers during initial interventions and respond to potential altercations.
The robots will be stationed near BBVA Stadium, which will host four World Cup matches in Monterrey.
