Mayor Benjamin Magalong expressed dismay over the poor sewerage and drainage conditions at the Baguio City public market during a surprise inspection, describing the situation as unfit for one of the city’s main commercial hubs.
He cited clogged canals filled with livestock waste and garbage, calling for a comprehensive redevelopment rather than temporary fixes.
The mayor emphasized the need for a long-term solution to restore the market’s role as a “show window” of the Summer Capital.
The market is currently awaiting the next steps on a ₱4.5-billion redevelopment proposal under a public-private partnership with SM Prime Holdings Inc.
Once the proposal passes key administrative hurdles, it may proceed to a “Swiss challenge” process, allowing other developers to submit counterproposals.
