The country’s bicameral Congress resumes today after a month-long Christmas break, with the House potentially taking up the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, as hinted by House Secretary-General Reggie Velasco.
A recent survey by the Social Weather Stations revealed that 41% of Filipinos support the impeachment, with lawmakers like Senior Deputy Speaker Aurelio Gonzales citing this as a sign of growing public demand for accountability.
Meanwhile, the Iglesia ni Cristo is holding a rally in support of President Marcos’ stance against the impeachment, prompting work and class suspensions in Manila and Pasay.
Critics, including Deputy Majority Leader Jude Acidre, claim the survey reflects public dissatisfaction with Duterte’s leadership style, calling it a rejection of “Duterte-style politics.”
Under Speaker Martin Romualdez, Congress has passed 166 laws since July 2022, averaging five measures monthly, highlighting its legislative productivity.
