China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, warned US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan against supporting the Philippines in the South China Sea dispute during their meeting on Wednesday, according to state media.
Wang asserted that the US should not use bilateral treaties to undermine China’s sovereignty or condone Philippine actions in the contested waters.
Sullivan, who arrived in Beijing for a three-day visit, expressed hope for productive discussions with Foreign Minister Wang.
Recent tensions in the region have been exacerbated by accusations from Japan and the Philippines against China for violating airspace and disrupting peace.
Wang reiterated China’s commitment to protecting its territorial and maritime claims in the South China Sea.
